6-29-11Bait

Fishing Blues

Taj Mahal

An older gentleman, just out of the frame, was getting his lines together but he had already laid out his bait.

This is how I imagine it might look to a seagull flying just above the fence rail looking for breakfast.

6-28-11 Rock ‘N’ Roll High School

Another lovely if humid day down by the river.

NYC schools finished the year today.  As is always true on the last half day of school, I bet attendance was oh, 50% at best…I don’t know who originally though a half day was the way to go for the final day of school but, hey, whatever floats their boat.

To celebrate the end of school…One of the quintessential New York bands…I give you The Ramones!!!!

6-27-11 Three Women

Do your eyes have an answer
To this song of mine
They say we meet again
On down the line
Where is on down the line
How far away?

Hammond Song – Margaret A Roche

Why these three women brought The Roches to my mind I can not say.  But there I was at 7:30am walking by the river to the subway (a bit of a detour it is true) when this shot appeared before me and Maggie, Terre and Suzzy popped into my head. A truly wonderful and quirky trio of sisters from NJ with the ability to create some unbelievable and spectacular harmonies.

6-26-11 True Colors

True Colors

I see your true colors
shining through
I see your true colors
and that’s why I love you
so don’t be afraid to let them show
your true colors
true colors are beautiful
like a rainbow

Billy Steinberg & Tm Kelly

Gay Pride Day in NYC. We got to the Parade Route at Noon and left around 3:30 when the Parade still had about an hour to go. A few pictures of the event are below…

Technically not a great picture – but a wonderful thing. The sign says “Together 54 years”

Behind them a lot of officers, many with their kids…

30 years engaged

Quaker Meeting

It has been a great and eventful weekend here in NYC as I think my past few posts have reflected…but at the end of the day…

6-25-11 Walking – Summertime And The Living Is Easy

We’re no threat, people
We’re not dirty, we’re not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather’s fine
We go fishin’ or go swimmin’ in the sea
We’re always happy
Life’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our philosophy

Sing along with us
Dee dee dee-dee dee
Dah dah dah-dah dah
Yeah we’re hap-happy
Dah dah-dah
Dee-dah-do dee-dah-do dah-do-dah
Dah-do-dah-dah-dah
Dah-dah-dah do-dah-dah

Crazy day today. Did a lot of work in the morning. Kept expecting a work related call that never came so, when Katherine called and said let’s have lunch downtown…off I went.  After lunch she rode her bike back home while I walked from 10th St to 42nd before heading home. Rapture of the River (Woman’s dance) was setting up, some people were rehearsing their dance thing in the Park a couple was getting married, people were waiting in a line 150 deep to get into a floating bar, and people were learning to kayak…to name just a few things going on.

Got home, washed up and then we went to the Hotel Chantelle to see The Sophisticates “The burlesque show that was  too hot for The Plaza.”

It was a hoot.

Hope you enjoy the slide show!

6-24-11 Watching The World (33-29…I love New York!!!)

Pass me the bottle, pass me the wine,
Open your throttle, and I’ll drive you right out of your mind,
Watching the waves, watching the sky,
I’m just sitting down here by the riverside,
Watching the world going by…

Chris De Burgh

Tonight was the opening of the graduating students exhibit at ICP.  Made for a very easy night in the lab as only 2 or 3 people wanted to work.  Spent most of the evening telling guests where the restrooms, food, and bar were.  With several hundred people there scattered over five or six rooms and two long hallways, a few amusing folk asked me if I knew where “X” was because they were not by their work.  My best advice was always the same “go to the bar and hang – they will show up”.

Several of the students I had become friendly with were kind enough to say thank you for your help – I don’t know what I really did for them but be nice and give them equipment but sometimes that is enough – and two were kind enough to bring me a glass of wine.

Spent most of my time at ICP and the rest of the evening following the NY State Senate deliberations on the Gay Marriage bill.  At approximately 10:25pm it passed and the Governor signed  the bill before Midnight, making New York the largest state in the country to approve Gay Marriage and only the second to do it through the Legislature.   I think the Pride Parade Sunday is going to be especially raucous!

The images above and below are two that did not make it to my final decision round for printing for my class but I really like them both.

6-23-11 At Rest With Motion

A foggy morning before a wet and humid day…

Of course some creatures don’t mind it…

6-22-11 – Time A Look Back/Forward

I really enjoyed my photo class and I wish it was not over. Great teacher (thanks Brad) and great TA ,(thanks Amanda), good people, serious about their work, as fellow students, at a facility that really does care about photography. For the Continuing Ed student I highly recommend International Center of Photography.  I hope to take another class come fall.

Several people asked me to report on which pictures got the best feedback from the class. It was varied but these three drew more attention then the rest…

Unfortunately, I had no time to print the following picture which I just love…This is worked harder than most of my pictures.  Just as a note everything I do is in Lightroom.  Many of my blogger buddies like Kieran over at sumpix are experts at Photoshop but I have never learned it. Too bad for me but you work with the tools you know and I really like Lightroom.

But what has been going on with the river?  Well GE has started Phase 2 of their dredging project to remove 40 miles of PCBsHudson River Cleanup. (Disclosure – for a brief time in the late 90′s or early oo’s I worked for a company GE bought and then discarded when they realized that they had no idea how to deal with a Hospitality/Tech company).

It is sad what we have done to our water.  The thing we truly cannot exist without (other than air and we haven’t exactly been kind to that) is the thing we have most screwed up. When you realize that the Hudson is one of the most (or the most) successful reclamation projects in the history of the world, and yet, even after GE finishes we will still have many miles of PCB infested water and sewage running into the river every time it rains in NYC, … really what exactly are we thinking?

6-21-11 Summer Solstice 1:16 PM EDT

Nope this picture was not taken at 1:16. It was more like 7:46pm but summer time it is.  So what will be the inescapable summer song of 2011? Last year was Katy Perry‘s California Gurls and Eminem‘s Love The Way You Lie

Lots of songs bring me summertime memories but my all time summer songs (Not favorite summer songs but the ones that really bring back the summer they held the air) would have to be…

Miss You

When Doves Cry

I Kissed A Girl

What songs bring back your summer memories?

Thanks to everyone who voted on yesterday’s photos whether via blog, Facebook or email.  It still isn’t too late to express your opinion…I don’t print until tonight.

6-20-11 Advice Needed

So I am looking for advice…I have 6 of the 8 images I intend to show as part of my final class presentation tomorrow (It is naturally about the Hudson). I need to choose 2 more and I am currently stuck and looking for outside eyes.  Any and all preference statements, comments and suggestion welcome!  If you don’t want to go public, feel free to email…

Thanks…
