It was a beautiful day. I walked from 158th down to 125th today (then cut over to Broadway so I could pick up some groceries). I have not seen so many good citizens violating the law since Memorial Day weekend. Every 10 feet another BBQ or Hibachi was burning. This is deeply illegal in NYC…Nanny Bloomberg would NOT have approved.
Abigail and Katherine cut a deal, this evening. If Katherine watched an hour of “Jersey Shore“, Abigail would watch “Dr Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb.” ( I was exempt from watching the Shore as I have done so more times than I want to remember).
The levels of meaning, the changes in our world, the sheer incongruity involved in this pact are outside the range of this blog but somewhere in here is a deeply profound message.
If you are not familiar with “Jersey Shore”…here is a clip of a parody/homage that Abigail’s Arabic 1 class did last spring… Beirut Shore…
If you are not familiar with Dr. Strangelove just click on the link for the trailer. The classic version of We’ll Meet Again by Vera Lynn (“We’ll Meet Again“) is played during the film but in the interest of not giving anything away here is a deeply moving version Johnny Cash recorded for “American 4″ shortly before he died. We\’ll Meet Again.
Columbia and Barnard Frosh and transfers are loading in this weekend. Before we watched Strangelove Abigail asked me if I could get her a special brand of ice cream. This was at 10pm. I went to 4 stores in the neighborhood and none had it. However, each was packed with Barnard and Columbia female Frosh in packs of 2 to more than 10, who seemed intent on gaining the Freshman 15 this weekend…ice cream, chips, soda, Nutella, candy, etc.
