In the past week or so I received a number of lovely comments off-line about the Quotidian Hudson. In the course of etalking with these folks I received three requests. One person commented that I had not shown any river art in a good while. The second said that they missed my fogs (I think they meant pictures and not my mind but…). The third asked if I would shoot more water. Wednesday, chance brought these requests together in such a way that I believe I was able to accommodate them all and chance threw in another little treat.

Following up on my attempting to not just look but to see, I walked in some familiar places in town yesterday. (Today I walked the stretch of the Hudson I have been on more than any other, details tomorrow.) This is what I found.

5-20-13 AIDS Walk – Rain

Yesterday was the Annual NYC AIDS Walk. It rained a lot but Abigail and about 30,000 of her neighbors (and five of her friends) walked anyway. I somehow did not get a picture of them when they came by the apartment. Since the walk does go right by us I am able to shoot from indoors in inclement weather which is a real treat. The angles are not great but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. Despite the rain it was a very successful day. They raised over $5 Million (Abigail raised $500)

We Americans do love getting our pictures taken.

5-20-13 Look-See-Shoot

I had an appointment downtown last Thursday. Since it was one of our few truly warm spring days so far in ’13, I didn’t want to waste it. I left early and took a long walk down the river. This is a part of the river that I am very familiar with so looking for things to shoot is not enough. I really have to see what is there. I firmly believe that our brain tends to shut our senses down in familiar locations even though everyday the river and its banks change. The river, the banks, the city are all living pulsing things and they change always.

I am thinking about all this because I am listening to too many people talk about my work. They are causing me to doubt my own vision and that is death to creativity. You know you are in trouble when you present your own work apologetically or off-handedly which I did today.

Enough of my pep talk to me. You don’t need to hear it. A few sites seen on a walk from 110th Street to 50th Street…

5-18-13 Bushwick and Bed-Stuy

Yesterday’s photowalk took us to Brooklyn to the Bushwick – Bed-Stuy border. Both of these communities were famous in the 70′s and 80′s but not for very positive reasons. The walk was led by Brenda Ann Kenneally. She has won a boatload of awards including: The W. Eugene Smith Award for Humanistic Photography, The International Prize for Photojournalism in Gijon Spain and the Best of Photojournalism Award for overall Best Use of the Web by the National Press Photographers Association. She moved to Bushwick in the mid 90′s and to Bed-Stuy in 2001 so she really knows the area well. Here are just a few shots to give you a bit of a sense of the walk.

First let’s visit Bushwick.

Now, let’s head off to Bed-Stuy.
