5-22-11 Was A Sunny Day

Was a sunny day
Not a cloud was in the sky
Not a negative word was heard
From the people passing by
’twas a sunny day
All the birdies in the trees
And the radio’s singing song
All the favorite melodies

Paul Simon

May 22nd. 52 degrees Fahrenheit; overcast.

I am taking a photography class at the  International Center of Photography and we were showing our work last week. A particular picture of mine came up, May 5 bright, sunny, endless sky, endless river, and the teacher remarked that this was very different from most of my other work which used a much darker palette.   He did clearly catch a truth and have a real insight about the work I have been making but I do feel that some of that has been pushed on me by the reality of the weather.

4-22-11 Earth Day-Liberty State Park, NJ

So, in a surprising turn of events, Earth Day dawned, gray, windy and cold and proceeded to get… grayer, windier and colder. It was a nice change from the weather we have been having which has been gray, windy and chilly.  High temperature today was 50 degrees. Historically it is 61. For the month of April NYC is averaging 3 degrees cooler than normal.

I realized that I had not been to New Jersey in a while and decided to head over to Liberty State Park and the western side of the mouth of the Hudson. There are truly some glorious views of Manhattan and the river from here. Even in the gray.

4-19-11 “Cast Away”

Remember that Tom Hanks movie where he is on an island? The second lead was “Wilson” – the soccer ball?

Hollywood is not always kind to its supporting players.

4-18-11 Luis Clemente De la Cruz @ Fort Tryon Park

I went up to Fort Tryon Park today. I hadn’t been there since after the big February snow and it seemed time. I spent an hour wandering and being particularly uninspired by what I was shooting.  The blossoming trees and little birds were nice but…A result, I think, of way too little sleep over the past few days, which has led to way too much unproductive thinking about the past, present and future.

The Park was beautiful but, once again everything was grey and it was sprinkling a little bit and my camera and I were not in sync.  The George Washington Bridge always inspires me and even it was doing bupkis for me.

Then I came around a corner and saw Luis Clemente De La Cruz.

We started speaking as I shot the bridge.  He is a gentleman from Elmhurst, New York who, if I understood the story correctly, frequently has his picture taken. He told me that he has received pictures from California and even Japan.

“The postman said to me, Luis, I did not know that you were so important that you would get mail from Japan.”

He asked me if I would take his picture and send him a print. I said, “I thought you would never ask.”

January 7, Snow

This was the little storm that followed the post Christmas snow. While we only got a couple of inches Bloomberg made sure that all the plows were out before flake one.

Today is the first day I really regret the one picture a day rule. I was on the NY Waterway ferries at 8:30, snow was swirling, fog was everywhere, the river was in a gray out and I have some really good shots but I hopped the 1 train up to the George Washington Bridge and that is where today’s shot comes from. The wind was howling up on top of the bridge, snow kept changing direction, keeping my lens dry enough to shoot was a major challenge and I frequently could not even see the river below.  I was there for about 45 minutes and only saw one other person. He was crossing from New Jersey to the city. We met right in the middle of the bridge, held eye contact just long enough to communicate “are you nuts – why are you here” and moved on.
