9-25-11 Return Of No Drama Sunday (Dine Out Irene)

People take pictures of the Summer,
Just in case someone thought they had missed it,
Just to proved that it really existed.
People take pictures of each other,
And the moment to last them for ever,
Of the time when they mattered to someone.
Picture of me when I was just three,
Sucking my thumb by the old oak tree.
Oh how I love things as they used to be,
Don’t show me no more, please.

-Ray Davies

Today was “Dine Out Irene” day in New York. Participating restaurants will donate up to 10% of their revenue for the day to help farmers devastated by Irene.  There is a companion effort called “Dine In Irene“  organized by GrowNYC and Bloggers Without Borders that will occur all week. Katherine and I ate a very late lunch at the Uptown Fatty Crab and then I took a walk up the river while she subwayed it on home.  The shots below were the last two I took for the day. Abigail and I disagree on which of these pictures I should use.

What do you think?

9-7-11 Of Roast Tomatoes, Quidditch, and Color Shift

Busy day today between moments of “real life”.

Started my day down at the river which remains a river of a different color after Irene and all the subsequent rain. Some people swear it is running red – Red River – but it looks brown with a hint of red to me.  Unfortunately, it reminds me of incredible damage to farms and farmers caused by Irene and this subsequent rain. We are members of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and this newsletter from the farmers at Roxbury Farm sum up a lot of what has happened.  Newsletter Week 13(1)

Later it was time to swing into some roasting and canning.  Taking a recipe from Kathy Gunst\’s new cookbook, Notes From A Maine Kitchen, I made six pints of roasted tomatoes, 5 pints for canning and I for immediate eating…

I think it came out quite well.  (Excellent cookbook… check it out).

Then I headed back to the river to see if I could catch some post sunset fog and GW Bridge glow.  I am not happy with those pictures but on my way down to the river I did catch our local Quidditch society (Muggle division) hard at play…

Remember to click on the image for a full-sized look.

I wasn’t sure whether to applaud or cry at the seriousness with which they took the game, so I simply shot it and then went on my way.

8-27-11 Will Irene Ever Come?

8-26-11 Panic In the Streets

Well, you know people are taking it seriously when the supermarket is low on both beer and water.

These young lovers did not give a hoot…The only thing that stopped the tickling and nuzzling was the passage of this mysterious object.  He grabbed it – they looked at it for a minute…she licked his ear…they let it go.

8-25-11 October 5th Can’t Come Soon Enough (We Must Surely Be Learning)

Martin Scorsese – documentary about George Harrison – October 5/6 on HBO – DVD release 10/10/11. I am so there! (yeah I am a Boomer and a fanboy – got a problem with that?)

Today…nothing got done. Life kept happening instead. Ended the afternoon with Abigail and me driving Katherine to Newark Airport for her flight to Iowa where she will visit one or more pig farms.

Got back in time to see some Adidas run or other. Don’t know why they were running or what the reason for but everyone was working hard and doing their best.

Did I mention that the Weather Channel is in its glory? Nothing like a hurricane that may hit unusual places to get the juices flowing.  The possibility that a Category 1 Hurricane will hit New York City or Long island and could easily hit Boston and Cape Cod is growing. Of course the forecast will change 12 times between now and Sunday…First it looks like it will hit the Outer Banks of NC which is not as sexy because, well, that happens a bunch. (Tell the people who live on the Outer Banks that this isn’t as important…)

Then we have some idiot in New York saying that the earthquake (and I bet he will add the hurricane)  is because god is pissed about NY legalizing Gay Marriage.  Well, I don’t know where god would find the time…after all he has to make sure that the right fella wins the CMA or BET best male vocalist award and then the amount of energy she has to expend making sure that the wide receiver scores a TD in a pre-season football game…

In the immortal words of Julian Bond…” If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t get gay married”

Lovely sunset today…

8-24-11 Your Guess Is As Good As Theirs

I don’t consider myself a pessimist. I think of a pessimist as someone who is waiting for it to rain. And I feel soaked to the skin.
Leonard Cohen

I know it has been said before but really people…how often do they get the weather right 5 days in advance?
