4-19-14 Travel Theme: Round (Circle Game)

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like when you’re older must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Joni Mitchell

Ailsa’s travel theme this week is round.  So many ways to go, so many directions that one can take…

Last summer season…a sun at Union Square Greenmarket

4-4-14 Travel Theme: Misty

Ailsa’s travel theme this week isMisty.

Dusk at the river on January 11th, 2014.

Back on February 1, 2011 a mile or so up the river was pretty misty as well:

Yesterday Andra finished the Natchez Trace walk!  Read about her journey to the finish here.

3-23-14 Travel Theme: Pink

Ms. Ailsa’s theme of the week is pink. For some reason this reminded me of the time way back when the internet was a fairly new adventure and “you’ve got mail” was a big deal, when Katherine needed some information for a recipe she was writing. She jumped on the computer, logged on to whatever we were using back then to search and typed in the word “cherry.” She was not prepared for the variety or amount of information that appeared.

This image is from last September at Photoville. I think it should be pink enough.

Here are some other pinks:

I tried to find an appropriate image from The Accidental Cootchie Mama for pink but the strangest thing happened when I typed her handle into Google’s image search. I did find a number of pictures of Andra but nothing pink. On the other hand I saw a number of images that were not her but…

Finally…this is the not safe for work version of a song called “……. Perfect” by the pinkest person I know of…

3-8-14 The Temptation Of This Week’s Travel Theme

“Extremists have shown what frightens them most: a girl with a book.

Malala Yousafzai

Today is International Women’s Day and so I thought I would plug Andra Watkins incredible Natchez Trace Walk to promote her book “To Live Forever An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis” at the top of the blog #toliveforeverbook. You can catch up with her adventures right here.

It also made sense to accept Ailsa’s Challenge over at Where’sMyBackpack.com. Her Travel Theme this week is tempting.

“I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it.”

Mae West

At least for one day the weather turned beautiful and you could actually feel spring a’coming. It will most likely snow a few more times and temps will bottom out in the low teens but I think we turned a corner. Many young men were tempted by the weather to come down to Hudson River Park and attempt feats of agility and daring…

I can’t really find a good antonym for tempting but I do believe a picture can be worth 1000 words…

2-27-14 Weekly Photo Challenge: The Third Three

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life.

It goes on.”

Robert Frost

The challenge this week was: three.  This is my third shot at it. Attempt 1 is here, and attempt 2 is here.

For today I thought I would be flexible and go back in time to June to Union Square.

2-23-14 Weekly Photo Challenge: To The Third Power: Red Edition

“If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time – a tremendous whack.”

Winston Churchill

The Photo Challenge this week is: “Threes”. I can’t let that go without a visit to my favorite spot on the Hudson. If you have been reading the QH for any amount of time you may have been expecting today’s sequence.  This is far more than the third time I have shown this place. More likely it is 3 to the 3rd power plus 3.

Here are some other views of three starting with Raymond Chandler:

“Alcohol is like love. The first kiss is magic, the second is intimate, the third is routine. After that you take the girl’s clothes off.”

2-22-14 Travel Theme: Work

Ailsa’s theme this week is work. I am having to do way too much work here in Boston to get online and post anything but that is a different story. This particular set might also work for the weekly photo challenge: threes, but I have other thoughts in mind for that.

2-19-14 Travel Theme: Romance 2

Thought I would delve way into the past for this week’s second pass at Ailsa’s Travel Theme - Romance. First attempt is here.

2-14-14 The Romance Of Treasure? The Treasure Of Romance? (Weekly Travel Photo Theme Challenge)

Challenge: Treasure

Travel Theme: Romance

The summer; Riverside Park overlooking the Hudson River; A Manhattan and a Martini; a sunset; Kicking back with my love. Works for me.

2-11-14 Weekly Travel Theme: Yellow (Iteration Department)

Today’s Daily Prompt from WordPress is: “Describe the one decision in your life where you wish you could get a “do-over.”

Now I read that and thought to myself “the one decision?” I had more than one decision I wished I could do-over when I was twelve. I think I probably reached the greatest number somewhere in my 30′s and it has been slowly decreasing since than but I can still reel off ten or more without even needing to think.

Then they add: “Photographers, artists, poets: show us ITERATION.”

This makes me ask if they are saying that photographers and poets are not artists…?

I am in a mood today.

Anyway here is my second iteration on Ailsa’s theme of yellow. You can find the first here.

Today, I decided to go for a very pale unsaturated yellow: the sun reflecting off the non frozen parts of the Hudson in late afternoon.

RSJohnson_Hudson_1402080057

RSJohnson_Hudson_1402080059

I shot these two pictures with the same white balance, the same aperture, ISO and shutter speed within a minute of each other. The only change is from a 300mm zoom to an 180mm zoom and yet there is a noticeable color shift in the quality of the yellow. Being a rationalist believer in the scientific method I am not really sure why I find this surprising as it is pretty basic physics/optics but I do, indeed I do.

Here are some other yellows for your consideration.
