4-4-12 Sometimes They Pick Themselves

I took a lot of very good photographs yesterday – he said immodestly.  This is not one of the best in formal terms but there are times that content trumps everything else.  Even without seeing the other pictures I took, I hope you agree that this one just cried out: “Pick Me, PICK ME!”

Now back on April 4, 2011 I was over on the Western Shore of the Hudson in Edgewater, New Jersey

  2. hi Quotidian!

I am the girl in the photograph

I just came by to say Thank You! for posting the picture and maybe planting a seed in people’s minds, maybe they will think twice and question routine infant circumcision.

We were there that day, and will hopefully be out on the streets on others, to raise awareness about what goes n in hospitals, behind closed doors.

    To answer purpleborough’s question:
we protest against circumcision because it takes away one’s right to choose for himself; it amputates a healthy, functioning body part and it leads to the death of at least 117 infant deaths PER YEAR in the United States (due to loss of blood, infection, shock, heart failure, stroke, organ rupture (infants have bled out internally due to rupturing their stomach, they are in so much pain and are in so much pain, and the force exerted when wailing at the top of their lungs can literally rip them apart internally).
And these are all avoidable deaths because circumcision in 99.99% of the cases has no medical benefit, it is cosmetic surgery on an infants genitals.
The 117 deaths statistic comes from this:

THYMOS: Journal of Boyhood Studies, Vol. 4, No. 1, Spring 2010, 78-90

    – Dan Bollinger

Abstract: Baby boys can and do succumb as a result of having their foreskin removed. Circumcision-related mortality rates are not known with certainty; this study estimates the scale of this problem. This study finds that approximately 117 neonatal circumcision-related deaths (9.01/100,000) occur annually in the United States, about 1.3% of male neonatal deaths from all causes. Because infant circumcision is elective, all of these deaths are avoidable. This study also identifies reasons why accurate data on these deaths are not available, some of the obstacles to preventing these deaths, and some solutions to overcome them.

I am from Eastern Europe and in my country circumcision is unheard of. I first came face to face with the reality of the situation almost 2 years ago, when I gave birth to my son and in the hospital my doctor and the nurses said “you have to make the decision, honey”.
I was dumbfounded – what and why? Its his penis, why would I have someone chop a piece off of it??

Anyhow…I dont want to waste the space on your wall, I just want to say I really appreciated you posting the picture and getting the word out…making people think!

    LOVE your page, btw!

    • Thanks for writing (Don’t worry about wasting space. Interesting comments never do). If you like I could send you a copy of the picture. I am sure that I will see you on the street again. Keep up the good work.

    • Marianna, American circumcision began with the prudishness of American and British mums during the gaslight era. They believed that a circumcised penis needed no hygienic attention, and that circumcised men were less likely to misbehave sexually. Circ persists in the USA because millions of American parents fear that an American boy with a natural penis will be at risk of ridicule from other boys and rejection in the bedroom when he tries to date.

America did not begin admitting that it circumcised its babies until intactivists began bemoaning the fact in the 1980s. When I was in middle and high school, I did not hear a single lewd remark about circumcision, even though all the boys around me were circumcised. I conclude that American parents said nothing to their boys — out of sheer embarrassment.

      • I am grateful to whatever powers be that my family is rooted in Eastern Europe and our children have not had to live through this atrocity….and I am thankful for all people speaking up against this disgusting practice! The only way we can ever make a difference to future generations is by raising our voice and spreading awareness and also demanding change of hospital/care giver practices.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments!!

  3. If you support the circumcision of babies for no medical reason you support the 1%. and this was a Genital Integrity teach in @ Occupy Wall St.. People actually came to learn something and did not leave disappointed, do some research. Occupy Medical Ethics, Occupy Human rights, Occupy Genital Integrity and Occupy Foreskin!

    • Jeremy,
I am, of course, approving this for publication because I do not believe in censorship. However, I have several points to make…the biggest one being that you have no idea from what I wrote what my position on circumcision is…I saw something that I thought my readers would enjoy. I shot it and published it. It was the most striking image I took that day.

Given that almost 70% of the circumcisions in the world are performed on Muslim boys living in Muslim cultures and countries…your saying support for circumcision is support of the 1% is confusing to me. Doubtless the ruling family of Saudi Arabia and the Mullahs of Iran to name a small sampling are part of the 1% but their people are not.

I have done my research on circumcision and I have an opinion. Part of what I have learned in my research (life) is that assuming what people believe and yelling at them is counter productive and very Tea Party like. Just my opinion of course.

Thanks for stopping by. Please come back and visit anytime and check out my Flickr account for other OWS photos from last Fall.

      • Sorry I think that something went wrong in my original post, It was aimed at the person who said “Heavens, what will “they” protest next?”

I did not mean to imply that you were not educated on this matter and I would also like to thank you for posting this pic.

I am a Genital Integrity Educator and I educate people on the form, function and care of the natural genitals whether they are girls, boys or the intersex.

    • Women of your daughters’ generation sometimes have done bedroom time with both kinds of men. Some of these women share their conclusions on social media. And what they say is very revealing. They much prefer to be bonked with a natural penis. In this and other ways, circumcision is anti-sexual, is puritanism wielding a scalpel. It is not healthier. If it were, comparing medical statistics across the North Atlantic would reveal it. But nobody makes that comparison. Instead, defenders of circumcision point to data from Africa, where the lifestyle and health care are far more primitive than our own.
