8-4-13 Blossom

Blossom is the name of our cat. Many years ago we named her after one of The Powerpuff Girls.

It is also the name of a piece we saw at The Brooklyn Museum today. We went there to see Gravity and Grace:  Monumental Works by  El Anatsui‘s  and I expect to post about that tomorrow but it is a longer blog.

When we entered the museum the first piece of art we saw was a player piano playing an arraignment of Strange Fruitthe old Billie Holiday song. The piano is “grafted” to a tree in such a way that they make up one dual object. The artist Sanford Biggers  said ” Blossom was 50% influenced by Buddha finding enlightenment under a tree and 50% about the Jena Six incident in Louisiana.”

It is an interesting work with a multitude of possible interpretations.
