12-19-13 I Wish I Had A Clever Title And Idea…But I Don’t

While I was trapped on The George Washington Bridge this evening, coming back from New Jersey (don’t ask), I spent a lot of time listening to Pure Heroine, Lorde‘s album/cd/collection of music that no one under the age of 40 actually pays for and downloads in its entirety. (Embarrassingly enough for WordPress and its affiliates neither Lorde nor Pure Heroine produced a recommended link…why Tumblr gets the young folk).

I expect that many/most of you are familiar with the song Royals,

“My friends and I—we’ve cracked the code.
We count our dollars on the train to the party.
And everyone who knows us knows that we’re fine with this,
We didn’t come for money.

But every song’s like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom.
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin’ the hotel room,
We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody’s like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.”

but the entire collection is well worth your attention. It is amazing and somewhat terrifying that the then 16 and now 17-year-old New Zealand girl is able to write the material that she has produced.  Yes, her mother is an award-winning poet but really? And that is before we talk about her music and voice.

Anyway, all that brought to mind this picture from March 14, 2011.

  1. Makes one stop and think… or just accept: there are many ways of being. People arrive at different places by different means. Lorde lives a world away from me, and anyone else; we brush against the other, we separate and wonder.

  2. Wow. Embarrassingly for me, I had not heard of this girl before. She’s good … especially considering her age, writing that.

    Writing snazzy titles is difficult!

I’ve often wondered what would happen if you ran out of gas in traffic jams like that…

    • Not embarrassing I think. There is too much to know now and unless someone points you in a direction you may not see something.
I have never run out of gas but I have seen it happen. You are not a popular person.
