17-06-02 I’m Back?

It’s been a long time…lots of stuff going on. Work (and the lack thereof), family, health, anxiety, depression, joy, and tension, transitions and transitioning, working it out and moving on. Broken Light Collective

I have spent a lot of time working on the first expression of my new book: “Trans_Lucent v 1.0”.  It is both a work in progress and a complete work. I have made 8 demo copies but… Naturally I am totally ambivalent about it.

Lots of time on the road, back and forth to Boston, went to NOLA for Jazz Fest, a not entirely successful trip down memory lane. You really can’t recreate the moments of your life and you shouldn’t make the mistake of trying. Have to remember to go and create anew. NOLA brought up lots of memories of the dead.

Took a wonderful class taught by Liam Cunningham at ICP.

Went to the Oaxaca Coast and Mexico City. It is good to be on the right side of Trump’s fantasy wall and was hard for us to return.

Spending lots of time on Cape Cod working on my parent’s place, trying to get it ship shape for the future.

Worked as a Teaching Assistant in ICP Community Partnership. Some of the most rewarding time I have spent in years.

I may actually have made some new friends! That doesn’t happen often.

Over the next few posts (which I hope will come at least every three days or so) I will be posting some of what I have been shooting.

I hope you all are well.

Let’s start old school in Black and White.

8-26-14 Glory Days – Bookends

These are perhaps my two favorite photographs of the summer. This is the way they came from the camera. I spent a lot of hours getting these shots. I believe I featured a different version of them earlier this year but I kept returning and finally got what I want.  I will probably work them a bit and may show them again or not.

8-24-14 Hawking – No Drama Sunday

“The best thing for being sad,” replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. That’s the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”
T.H. White –  The Once and Future King

When I was a child my second favorite book, after The Lord Of The Rings, was The Once and Future King. I loved it all but for some reasons the hawking scenes made the deepest impression. This may be why, when I saw the hawk mousing yesterday, I spent 40 minutes just watching and occasionally shooting him/her as other people stopped, took a snap and moved on. These are four of my favorites from yesterday.

10-29-12 Sandy

I am not sure that I have ever posted pictures I did not take before but dangerous times call for dangerous measures…Thank you for all the messages of concern. We are fine because we live in Morningside Heights but as you can see much of the rest of the city is flooding. I have no pictures from Battery Park but the Harbor and the Hudson are cresting at 14 feet which is 9 feet above normal…

12-23-11 Staying Close To Home

As the year winds down and we put tomorrow’s party together, I do not leave the neighborhood except to shop.  This means that I get to shoot and reshoot the same vistas and ideas over and over again, a very useful exercise.  There is something liberating and almost meditative about viewing the same scene every day. Looking for the new or expanding the old…

This evening we attended a lovely Chanukah party at Elizabeth and Lee’s apartment. Originally I only had one video for today BUT due to The Three Tenors discovery of yesterday, you get two today…
