17-01-05 First Cold Night of 2017

Has put me in mind of warmer times…

Karaoke on Coney Island. She sang “You Don’t Own Me.” Every woman over 30 in the audience sang along.

The nuns weren’t actually singing in Brooklyn Bridge Park but who could resist?

17-01-03 Trans_Lucent Dreams

“Everybody is wrong about everything, just about all the time.” – Chuck Klosterman
“I am not one of those who in expressing opinions confine themselves to facts.” – Mark Twain

I am always extremely impressed with those definitive people who can say with confidence on January 1st that: “this was my best/favorite work of the past year.”

I seem to always feel: “Well, yes, that is true today but how about next month? Or next week? Or tomorrow? I will have changed by then. So, I expect my opinion will as well.”

Pretty wishy-washy, I guess.

Anyhow, a few of my favorite images made in 2016 from my project “Trans_Lucent”  as of 1/3/17 at 9:00 am…

16-05-11 WPC- Mother Earth

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half to see ’em
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And they put up a parking lot
Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Joni Mitchell
I spent Sunday at Coney Island…I took a lot of pictures of many of the human made spectaculars.
and yet…
I couldn’t help feeling that the original was better.

2-19-14 Travel Theme: Romance 2

Thought I would delve way into the past for this week’s second pass at Ailsa’s Travel Theme – Romance. First attempt is here.

Taken many years ago at one of the early Mermaid Day Parades.

11-13-13 Boro Walk -2013-It’s A Wrap

All Borough walks are concluded for 2013. I thought I would throw together a gallery of the 10 walks. One shot of the photographer and one shot that represented something about the Borough or walk – to me.

These surely do not qualify as pictures for an exhibit. These are tokens as much for my memories as for any other reason. The only borough not represented is Staten Island…but hey, they are used to being an afterthought! So, as always, click on any picture in the gallery to jump to full size.

10-18-13 Weekly Photo Challenge: Hue

“…share a photograph with a prominent color (or assortment of colors) that reveals more about you.”

The Weekly Photo Challenge this week is Hue.  The quote above is from the directions.

Now, to my mind every photograph especially the ones that the photographer shares with the world “reveals more about you.” However, your mileage may vary.

In any case here are several views o’ hue.

6-2-13: Travel Theme- Costume

Ailsa’s Travel Theme this week is Costumes. I think last year’s Mermaid Day Parade fits the bill.

Because of Sandy, the parade lost a lot of its revenue generating potential over the winter and has started a Kickstarter campaign to keep it afloat this year. Feel free to give them a buck or two here.

5-8-13 A Long Time Coming – Sandy

Wild, wild the storm, and the sea high running,
Steady the roar of the gale, with incessant undertone muttering,
Shouts of demoniac laughter fitfully piercing and pealing,
Waves, air, midnight, their savagest trinity lashing,
Out in the shadows there milk-white combs careering,
On beachy slush and sand spirts of snow fierce slanting,
Where through the murk the easterly death-wind breasting,
Through cutting swirl and spray watchful and firm advancing,
(That in the distance! is that a wreck? is the red signal flaring?)
Slush and sand of the beach tireless till daylight wending,
Steadily, slowly, through hoarse roar never remitting,
Along the midnight edge by those milk-white combs careering,
A group of dim, weird forms, struggling, the night confronting,
That savage trinity warily watching.
I may have mentioned that I went to Coney Island last Saturday…
While it wasn’t hit as hard as the Rockaways, Staten Island or parts of the Jersey Shore it still took a beating.
Sadly, six months later one of the true Coney landmarks is still not back in business.
