16-01-25 Begging Your Indulgence

I spent the last week as TA for a great class taught by the very talented Winona Barton-Ballentine (check her work out!) called In Design For Photographers at ICP. I worked on a little booklet there which I am somewhat pleased with (I have more to do, but it is heading where I want to go.)

I had hoped to put it onto QH so you could see it. In that cause, I have been attempting to figure out how to embed a PDF into a post so you don’t have to click on a link to see it. I have not yet been able to make that work. I know it is possible in WP.org but I am not sure it is possible in WP.com. So, the indulgence I am begging is twofold.

1: If you are a WP maven can you guide me through how to do this?

2: Will you please click on the link and take a look? (FYI: One page may be NSFW depending on your work environment)

Thank you.

15-07-19 _ The 12th Annual Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim

Today was The 12th Annual Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim to benefit River Pool at Beacon. Katherine swam it for the sixth time. Our friends Kathy and John think it was their 7th time, Our friend Karen has done all 12 and our friends, the sisters Starcevic, swam it for the first time…

I hope this slide show works…

12-25-13 Hope All Had Fun

We went to see American Hustle this PM as a reward for being us.  Great movie. See it.

A great party last night with many friends old and new. A new generation has taken over the children’s room. As I said last night: “30 odd years ago when we started these parties, we had a children’s room and it wasn’t my problem. Then, thankfully, for many years it was my problem. Now, thankfully, it once again is not!

A slide show from the party, mainly snaps, but a few photos and a portrait I truly love, and then one of my favorites from one of my favorite singers.

11-19-13 A Birthday Stroll- Palisades Interstate Park – Alpine NJ

And your mind is reeling as the sky is changing
All you’re feeling and you’re re-arranging
The rest of your life like lines on an old sailors chart
Fred Eaglesmith / Mary Gauthier

And the Hudson, it holds the life
we thought we did it on our own
I thought I had no sense of place or past
time was too slow, but then too fast
the river takes us home at last

Dar Williams

Took a long walk today through Palisades Interstate Park, the Alpine, New Jersey section, to contemplate my birthday…

Okay, that’s enough of that.

What did become clear is that I have not been getting down to the river nearly enough and that, at least, will be changing.  Revamped website is almost done. Rethought book is closing in to lay out.  It is past time for me to stake these things down and move on to the next cycle.

Meanwhile, take a little hike with me but watch out for the Park Rangers trucks!

10-15-13 The Hudson, The Bridge and The Lighthouse

The river roads collect the tolls
for the passage of our souls
through silence, over woods, through flowers and snow
and past the George Washington Bridge,
down from the trails of Breakneck Ridge,
the river’s ancient path is sacred and slow

3-8-13 International Women’s Day (Travel Theme)

I won’t forget when Peter Pan came to my house, took my hand
I said I was a boy; I’m glad he didn’t check.
I learned to fly, I learned to fight
I lived a whole life in one night
We saved each other’s lives out on the pirate’s deck. And I remember that night
When I’m leaving a late night with some friends
And I hear somebody tell me it’s not safe,
someone should help me
I need to find a nice man to walk me home.

When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom,
Climbed what I could climb upon
And I don’t know how I survived,
I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew.

And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too.

I was a kid that you would like, just a small boy on her bike
Riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw.
My neighbor come outside to say, “Get your shirt,”
I said “No way, it’s the last time I’m not breaking any law.”

And now I’m in this clothing store, and the signs say less is more
More that’s tight means more to see, more for them, not more for me
That can’t help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat

When I was a boy, See that picture? That was me
Grass-stained shirt and dusty knees
And I know things have gotta change,
They got pills to sell, they’ve got implants to put in,
they’ve got implants to remove

But I am not forgetting…that I was a boy too

And like the woods where I would creep, it’s a secret I can keep
Except when I’m tired, ‘cept when I’m being caught off guard
And I’ve had a lonesome awful day, the conversation finds its way
To catching fire-flies out in the backyard.

And so I tell the man I’m with about the other life I lived
And I say, “Now you’re top gun, I have lost and you have won”
And he says, “Oh no, no, can’t you see

When I was a girl, my mom and I we always talked
And I picked flowers everywhere that I walked.
And I could always cry, now even when I’m alone I seldom do
And I have lost some kindness
But I was a girl too.
And you were just like me, and I was just like you”

8-6-11 Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim…Guest Blog!

As I wrote last weekend…What I Did Instead… Katherine swam in the Newburgh to Beacon swim to benefit River Pool the past three years and I photographed it.  That did not happen this year. Katherine simply had no time to train for the swim, way too much going on, so I went to Boston for the Sox – Yankees game. Katherine did go to the swim but instead of swimming she filled my role and shot.

The water was much rougher this year than in previous years and many swimmers commented on that. It was clear a storm was trying to roll in but the swim was just after Noon and it wasn’t due until 4pm so swim they did.

I know that a few swimmers (who are also writers) are readers of the blog so feel free to post a description or send one to me and I will post it (giving credit where due, of course).

Hope you enjoy the slide show!  You should really play this song as you watch…This Land Is Your Land or this one… The Hudson

They both open in a separate window.Once the music starts come back to this tab and viola!

2-26-11 Songs of The Hudson

Every now and again I will be linking to songs about the River. I hope that the way I am doing this does not violate any copyright…I’m sure someone will let me know if I am.  I thought I would start with this beautiful performance by Dar Williams of her song “The Hudson”
