16-03-25 Weekly Photo Challenge Half Light

In memory of my uncle, Edward Devine Johnson (1926-2016)

There’s a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –

Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference –
Where the Meanings, are –

None may teach it – Any –
‘Tis the seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –

When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, ’tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –

Emily Dickinson

Half Light

15-01-07 Rorschach Test

Some, too fragile for winter winds
The thoughtful grave encloses—
Tenderly tucking them in from frost
Before their feet are cold.

Never the treasures in her nest
The cautious grave exposes,
Building where schoolboy dare not look,
And sportsman is not bold.

This covert have all the children
Early aged, and often cold,
Sparrow, unnoticed by the Father—
Lambs for whom time had not a fold.

4-11-13 Weekly Photo Challenge: (Once More With Feeling) Yellow

Nature rarer uses yellow
Than another hue;
Saves she all of that for sunsets,–
Prodigal of blue,Spending scarlet like a woman,
Yellow she affords
Only scantly and selectly,
Like a lover’s words.
As you know by now the “Weekly Photo Challenge was Color.  My two previous attempts are here and there.  Today I thought we would try yellow.  As Ms. Dickinson says, a few are from nature but most of these are not.

9-24-12 There Is Something In The Air

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry’s cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I’ll put a trinket on.
Emily Dickinson
Nature XXVII, Autumn.

I went to Brooklyn for a meeting yesterday and took a little photo walk around BAM.

You can feel it. 75 degrees in late September just feels other than 75 degrees in May and certainly has no resemblance to 75 degrees in July. People usually say they can feel it in the air but I think it is the light that makes the change.  Your eyes show the brain what is happening, the brain tells the nose to check it out and suddenly realizes that things smell a new way, and then the message reaches skin and voila, the air feels other than it has been.

But I say it is the light that is the primal response…

3-17-12 Not Wearing Of The Green

“March is the month of expectation,
The things we do not know,
The Persons of Prognostication
Are coming now.
We try to sham becoming firmness,
But pompous joy
Betrays us, as his first betrothal
Betrays a boy.”
