17-03-02 The Last Time Ever I Saw

Our best friends are moving out of their gorgeous Riverside Drive apartment (to another beautiful apartment further uptown). They asked me to come by and shoot it for the memory files which I did 20 minutes ago. Those pics are for them but, they also have a spectacular view of the Hudson River. I’m heading out of town in 20 minutes so did not have a lot of time to work on anything but here is one pic from a 60 mph, 50 degree day.

“Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.”

15-05-30 Weekly Photo Challenge: On The Way (Up Against The Wall Edition)

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I was walking through Red Hook as a TA on an ICP Borough Walk and ran into this. Wedding Photo or Al Capone?

When winter first begins to bite
and stones crack in the frosty night,
when pools are black and trees are bare,
’tis evil in the Wild to fare.

2-16-14 The Great Beauty of The Fabulous Ice Age

La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty) directed by  Paolo Sorrentino is an extraordinarily wonderful 2013 film from Italy. Excellent cast and exquisite cinematography. We saw it last night. Highly recommended.

The Fabulous Ice Age is a new American film by Keri Pickett seemingly about the history of ice shows in the USA. It is much more than that. It shows us much about who we (the United States) were through much of the 20th Century and how our cultural influence and thus our power spread over the globe. It is streaming for free on Netflix and you should check it out. (Full disclosure – Way back at the start of her career Keri took our wedding photos. We could not have made a better choice. As is the way of these things we lost touch until this film came to NYC)

3-4-13 Travel Theme: Roads

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”

Tolkien

To celebrate her road trip Ailsa picked the theme: “roads'” Now there are many ways to interpret “roads” just as there are many, many roads for us to take although, Tolkien posited that there really is only one road with many tributaries…

“He used often to say there was only one Road; that it was like a great river: its springs were at every doorstep, and every path was its tributary. ‘It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,’ he used to say. ‘You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

In any case my contribution to the theme is from an airplane ride we took around Cape Cod back in 2006. The tower is Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. MA. The big road at the top is RT 6. The road you can barely see coming off of it is Cornwell Street. The road that bends off Cornwell and heads towards the Monument is Cemetery Road. (if you enlarge the picture you will soon see why.) Not shown is Alden St which comes off Cemetery and High Pole Hill Road which comes off Alden and takes you to the Monument…
