16-05-11 WPC- Mother Earth

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people
A dollar and a half to see ’em
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And they put up a parking lot
Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
‘Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

4-21-14 Travel Theme: Round (Memorial Edition – Circle Game 2)

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him take your time it won’t be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There’ll be new dreams maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Joni Mitchell

Last night’s Mad Men leads me to finish my Circle Game rumination. Abigail’s last six weeks of high school also push me here…

Ailsa’s Travel Theme this week is round. My first go round is here.

Yesterday, I went down to South Ferry and the Battery to see the mouth of the Hudson. Just off the entrance to the harbor are three monuments (last weeks photo challenge – here). The first is The American Merchant Marines Memorial.  The second is the Korean War Veteran’s Memorial. The third is “The Sphere”.  It is a sculpture by Fritz Koenig that installed in 1971 in the plaza of the World Trade Center between the towers. It was designed to symbolize world peace through world trade. During the attacks of 9/11 it was damaged, but it was relocated – unrepaired -to Battery Park on March 11, 2002.

4-19-14 Travel Theme: Round (Circle Game)

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like when you’re older must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

1-1-14 The Calendar Flips

“I said,
“Constantly in the darkness
Where’s that at?
If you want me I’ll be in the bar”

Joni Mitchell

2014. A new year. All is right with the world. Everything is coming up roses…

or not.

Hope that you all had a great new year’s eve and day whether partying with 600 of your closest friends, a small intimate gathering, or just a quiet evening avoiding all the celebrants.

We had an extraordinary twilight to kick off 2014.

11-18-13 Spring HDR Phone Urge Go

I get the urge for going
But I never seem to go
I get the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter is closing in

Joni Mitchell

Even though we are on our third day of 60 degree plus weather the Winter Solstice is only 33 days away and this song has been appearing in my mental playlist more and more frequently.

The sky has been spring beautiful for the most part these last few days and the Pro HDR app on my phone called to me and I answered.

11-24-12 Up On The Roof

We had some fun in Boston/Newton.

Abigail slept in the attic, aka my old room.  She rummaged through my closet and came home with my old ripped up Korean vintage army jacket and a blue jean jacket. Sadly my leather jacket and buckskin fringe were worn down to the nub and thrown away years ago. There was also a vest she did not take. She kept looking at it in amazement and asking me if I really wore “that”. Of course I did. It’s really too bad none of the shirts survived…

She also raided my album collection and among other wonders came up with “The History of the Grateful Dead Vol 1 (Bear’s Choice), The Warner/Reprise 1969 Songbook and The Warner/Reprise 1969 Record Show. These albums include The Fugs, The Mothers of Invention, Tiny Tim, Van Dyke Parks, Joni Mitchell, etc.

We looked in the attic half of the attic and came up with a treasure trove of pictures of my grandparents and my mother and her sisters as kids and teens.

Her finally request…lower the ladder attached to the ceiling and let’s go up on the roof, which we did about an hour before we headed back to NYC.

3-12-12 Water

When you look at that nature world it becomes an icon, it becomes a holy picture that speaks of the origins of the world. Almost every mythology sees the origins of life coming out of water. And, curiously, that’s true. It’s amusing that the origin of life out of water is in myths and then again, finally, in science, we find the same thing. It’s exactly so. – Joseph Campbell

Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans. – Jacques Cousteau

All day I face the barren waste/ Without a taste of water/ Cool water/ Old Dan and I/ Our throats slate dry/ Our spirits cry out for water/ Cool clear water/ Keep on movin’ Dan/ Some devils had a plan/ Buried poison in the sand/ Don’t drink it man/ It’s in the water/ Cool clear water/ In my mind/ I see A big green tree/ And a river flowin’ free/ Waitin’ up ahead/ For you and me/ Cool clear water – Bob Nolan/Revised by Joni Mitchell

I went to St John The Divine today, I wanted to see their exhibit The Value of  Water(website) before it closes on 3/25/12. If you are in the NYC Metro area, I strongly recommend a visit.

Going up the Hudson, baby do you want to go...

9-23-11 Urge For Going 5:04 AM

I’ll ply the fire with kindling and pull the blankets to my chin
And I’ll lock the vagrant winter out and bolt my wandering in
I’d like to call back summertime and have her stay just another month or so
She’s got the urge for going and I guess she’ll have to go

And she get the urge for going when meadow grass is turning brown
All her empires are falling down
Winter’s closing in-

Joni Mitchell

I first heard the Tom Rush version in 1968 on WBZ, Boston and my memory tells me that the next morning I grabbed all the available change I had, hopped on the subway to Cambridge, went to Harvard Square to The Coop (Harvard Coop – don’t remember who was the member in my family but someone was) and bought both his “The Circle Game” album and Joni Mitchell’s”Song To A Seagull“.  This is probably a “found” memory, rather than a factual one but I like it and I am sticking with it.

Today was the Autumnal Equinox and it was an appropriately rainy, gloomy, gray day. The problem with that is that the ground in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic is already saturated and even small amounts of rain are causing local flooding.

9-15-11 Looking Down – Looking Back

And the seasons they go ’round and ’round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Joni Mitchell

I paid no attention to the weather report when I went out. I didn’t even look up at the sky, just headed down to the park and the river. I had an hour before I had to get to an appointment which seemed like a good amount of time to walk and think and shoot.

Within 10 minutes it started to rain, pretty hard too. I spent most of the next 30 minutes under the canopy of trees with my hoodie up, pulling the camera out every now and then to catch the river through the trees when it looked particularly rambunctious. I got some great shots but all in all I like this one the best which I took before the rain began.
