16-08-23 WPC: Rare – Mother Nature Show Edition

I find it rare for Mother Nature to be this precise in her lighting design. I guess no matter how experienced we are we all like to mix it up sometime.

15-03-19 Backstage At A Student Shoot (Playtime)

I helped a student from the “Lighting Techniques: An Overview” class taught by Robert Meyer, setup and work her first solo shoot today. She did a good job and so I got to shoot some backstage shots. This is one I liked a great deal and then I got to play with it in post production…

15-03-02 Compare And Contrast – Studio and Lightroom

Between the snow and the icy roads I didn’t get back from the wedding until almost 2am. The driving was more tiring then the working.

I had planned a day of shooting but everything except my eyes and brain felt wiped so thought I would work on some images for presentation at my Friday workshop.

The first image of Derrick is the original. The second is with no change except white balance. The others show further work done. I have two favorites which will go unremarked upon.  Feel free to let me know if any resonate with you!

3-15-14 Inside A Followup To the Weekly Photo Challenge

Inside, the Weekly Photo Challenge is. Attempt the first I made here. Writing as if Yoda I am transcribing? Why, know I don’t.

Probably just a bit tired and in need of a spot of silly.  Today we have a followup to the studio play from yesterday. This might be more appropriate if the challenge was in and out but I still think I can use this as inside. These come from two different pours.

RSJohnson_1403130088

RSJohnson_1403130094It didn’t stay inside long but the liquid was inside!

and now a brief pause to once again take you inside the mind of The Accidental Cootchie Mama. If you enjoy a good read, you really should check out her book “To Live Forever An Afterlife Journey Of Meriwether Lewis.” She should have passed the 200 mile mark today on her walk and is almost half way through!

3-14-14 Getting Inside The Weekly Photo Challenge

Indeed, this week’s challenge is inside. I’ve particularly enjoyed the last few weeks because they have been wide open prompts but nothing as wide open as inside. As it happens, I unknowingly shot a response to the challenge last night before it existed.

So let’s start with a glass of water.

RSJohnson_1403130103

H’mm what to do next…I know let’s add a strawberry

RSJohnson_1403130106

and what do we get?

3-10-14 A Change Of Perspective

It wasn’t until I reread my post that I realized more than anything I have shown so far, the two photographs I chose truly represented a change of perspective, which is the photo challenge this week.

We spent some more time in the studio last Thursday. Our models were Jim Carvalho and Lulu Ward, two entirely professional and wonderful people. I expect I will be posting more of them down the road but today I wanted to show my work, as it were.

A bit different than my usual perspective, I think…

2-24-14 Weekly Photo Challenge: Threes (#2) Lighting Edition

“One out of four people in this country is mentally unbalanced. Think of your three closest friends; if they seem OK, then you’re the one.”

Ann Landers

We were playing with basic lighting setups in the studio last week and I realized that I had examples of three different setups. Since three is the Weekly Photo Challenge (which means I should do it three times) this is attempt #2. Attempt # 1 is right here.  Attempt number three is still to come.

First Rembrandt lighting so-called because it supposedly duplicates a lighting situation Rembrandt used in his portraits very frequently. Look for a triangle of light under the eye that is opposite the main light.

RSJohnson_1402200021

The second is called “reverse beauty” or “monster’ lighting. I will let you guess why.

RSJohnson_1402200047

The third is glamour or beauty or butterfly lighting. It is called this because of the little butterfly (use your imagination) that appears under the nose. Women’s fashion uses it all the time. It is not supposed to be used on women over thirty (or s0) or men. I do not know who makes up these rules because I think this young lady looks fabulous.

RSJohnson_1402200059

“There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.”

Will Rogers

Final attempt is somewhat inspired by The Accidental Cootchie Mama’s post today and somewhat inspired by a lighting workshop I am taking.

7-26-12 Lights Cameras Models

Today we shot with models in a studio environment. First time for me.  I shot Rachel and Jim. It was a great pleasure to work with both of them.
