17-01-06 WPC: Names

Proper names are poetry in the raw. Like all poetry they are untranslatable. ~W.H. Auden

This week’s challenge is: Names.  “This week, share a photo that includes a name.”

Lots of song titles include names…here is a slightly oddball one.

If names are not correct, language will not be in accordance with the truth of things. ~Confucius

SET THEORY

In a dark room a candle is lit.

Everything in that room
is at once illuminated on one side
and projects a shadow on the other.

Everything that has light casts a shadow.
Light and shadow go hand in hand.

But if the flame itself has no shadow,
Does the candle’s flame really have light?

15-03-21 Seven Pictures -Fourteen Poems

I spent all day working in Lightroom on the pictures I shot yesterday in celebration of Spring.

In the process I “found” fourteen  2-line poems. I “created” them by taking the playlist of the 14 songs I had on auto repeat and for the first group of seven, taking the first line of each song in order played and then, for the second group, taking the first line of song 1, the second of song 2, the third of song 3 etc…

Scarily some of them are actually not just nonsensical.

So, to accompany your journey through my photographic day yesterday, here we go.

From my apartment

9-09-14 I’ve Stolen Your Words (Western Cloud Tributary)

I’VE STOLEN YOUR WORDS

After Shelomo Ibn Gabiriol

I’ve stolen your words, I don’t deny it—
   I ate them and broke teeth on the liberation wall;
did I think I could soar with your songs
or use them to hide my flaws? I did.

Can a woman scale the tree of life
and eclipse the application of light in the world?
It’s always, I think, a simple plan of clouds:
can the East River be drained with a teaspoon?
