1-10-13 It’s Not The Vision I Had

Due to a wealth of computer problems that don’t interest me so I am sure would not interest you, I was chased from Photoshop back to Photoshop Elements 10, which is a lovely program but can’t recreate what I did yesterday.  However after much play I enjoy what I came up with. It certainly is NOT the vision I had but getting there was fun.

I know some of you have read the title of this piece in the blog before but it is such a perfect statement for any part of life that I must repeat it now and again. I like it for many reasons but the biggest one, beyond the truth of it, is that it is neither a positive or negative statement. It just is. We set out to do something, and no matter how successful we may be, it is never the vision we started with. Sometimes better, sometimes not, but always different.

The Chair of the Pomona College Theater Department had this on the wall of his office when I first met him. It has always stayed with me.

Behold! The “vision” I did not have!

The New Year approaches. A question I pose to myself is: will I post everyday in 2013?  Time and circumstance will tell. Before I close out with some other of my favorite photographs of 2012 I want to acknowledge some of my favorite blogs, the ones I read consistently. All have something that I suggest warrants your attention. In no order at all they are…

Mirth and Motivation

For those unfamiliar with The Twilight Zone, this Wiki article explains yesterday’s title and quote:

To Serve Man

Happy New Year to one and all. I hope you have a glorious 2013.

12-29-12 The Twilight Zone

“It’s A Cookbook”

We went to The Museum of Natural History yesterday to see their special exhibit “Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture.”  We arrived early and Katherine said she wanted to see the Origami Christmas Tree.  I can strongly recommend the Global Kitchen exhibit and the tree is a spectacular mini-marvel with all origami ornaments of, naturally, animals.

We were enjoying the tree and closely examining it when Katherine found a lovely Twilight Zone lagniappe. Perhaps you recognize it? You have to look closely…

Non Twilight Zone fans – explanation tomorrow.

Weekly Photo Challenge: My 2012 In Pictures

“And the moral of the story is that you don’t remember what happened. What you remember becomes what happened.”
John Green

I started working on this to close out the year when what to my wondering eyes did appear but this weeks photo challenge – My 2012 In Pictures.

Many folks, and newspapers and magazines (how old school) and internet postings do this so I wasn’t being particularly imaginative or “out of the box” (please god may that expression die on 12/31/12) when I decided that would be the way I end this year.

The problem is that I have over 30,000 images from 2012. I will be posting a few of my favorites over the next four days. I am trying to not use shots that I put in the blog. We will see how that goes.

12-25-12 Christmas Night In Dyker Heights

Katherine wanted to go see the lights in Dyker Heights so we (K, Abigail, Gracie and the driver) piled in the car and headed out. When we got to the Heights the streets were crawling with other motorists who had the same idea as well as a multitude of pedestrians.  They also run bus tours through the area for tourists.  It seems that these displays are known near and far.

If you go it is best to get there by 8pm as people start shutting down by 9pm or so.

12-24-12 Tradition

We have a long-standing tradition in our family of the Christmas Eve Party.  Every now and again we have been unable to have one for one reason or another but it is important to the three of us and come hell, last year, or hell and high water, this year, we do our best to throw a party and have a family (in the modern sense of the term)  celebration. We have people who have been coming to Christmas Eve parties since we first moved to NYC from CA. all those years ago.  I always have my camera. It is a snap shot sort of night but here a few pics to give you a sense of our world.

12-24-12 Christmas Eve Cookies

The girls have just finished decorating the cookies and it is now the calm before the storm.
For the last 10 years or so we have thrown a Christmas Eve party. Sometimes a sit down dinner but more usually a scrum and buffet.
Abigail and her friends, Eva, Caroline, and Edy get together mid afternoon for cookie decorating. This has been going on as long as we have had the party so from 6 to 16 so far.
Here are two iPhone pictures of the results.
