15-11-12 Catching Up

I have not been blogging nearly as frequently as I used to – once a day for 3+ years and now perhaps twice a week, but it isn’t because I’ve thrown in the towel. Life situations change and our responses change with them.

When I started the QH my life was in the midst of a multitude of crises and blogging about the Hudson River, the extraordinary yet prosaic, polluted and beautiful, historic and forgotten, river was a way that I could exert some control over the rain of crap that was falling down on me and all my loved ones.

Things change. Like the little kid said in the old joke…”I know there is a pony in here somewhere.”

Less scatalogically as the Pistol Annies sang:

My life is like a lemon drop
I’m suckin’ on the bitter to get to the sweet part”

I don’t know if we ever actually get there but as my favorite quote goes:

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.

Samuel Beckett

All this is to say that we are all currently healthy, Abigail is having a great time in college, Katherine’s work is tremendously fulfilling, and while I am “under-incomed” I am working and finding time to do my photographic work.

I am pleased to say that this image sold for $450 at the Friends for Friends Auction and that in total the auction raised over $165,000 for children’s healthcare in Asia.

The holiday season is upon us. If you are looking for a gift there are still a few copies of The Quotidian Hudson and of One Quick Blink available. I also have a variety of prints for sale which can be found on my website: http://www.robertsjohnsonphotography.com

To everyone, thank you all for following the QH over the years.

Meeting and getting to know some of you, whether in RL or virtually, has been a great treat.

15-10-03 Really? Bruce Davidson, Lee Friedlander, Berenice Abbott, William Eggleston, Mary Ellen Mark, And Me?

On Tuesday 10/6/15 Friends Without A Border is having an auction to “Benefit Children’s Healthcare in Asia”. There are two parts to the auction, a live auction and a silent auction. Lot S86  (Saugerties Lighthouse) is mine! All the people in the headline of this blog and many other extraordinary photographers also donated work. To find myself in a catalogue with these people is mind-blowing, astounding, humbling, a dream.

Please click the Friends Without Borders link above to get a sense of the organization and the brilliant work being auctioned.

If it is in your purview to contribute, bid or buy, please do.

Life is a strange and wondrous thing.

15-03-09 Weekly Photo Challenge – Orange Again

The challenge this week is orange. Now, of course, back when life was not as crazy as it is now, orange stood for the second highest terrorist alert warning color.  Ah, those were the days, eh?

But…

“Those were the days my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose”

Gene Raskin

My first orange go is here.

But today I thought I would go with something a bit more traditional…

“Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze”

Sheldon Harnick

8-8-13 You Can’t Fight Fate

The truth is that sometimes you can not fight fate. For the past three days I have been intending to write a long piece about the Two Rows Wampum Renewal campaign and for the past three days something has intervened and I find myself at 11PM scrambling to create a photograph or two and putting it off until tomorrow.  Well, again, it is 11 pm and again I have not made any photographs. The last few night have been family stuff, but today involved the Advanced Fine Art Printing Workshop I am taking and a friend, an agent, and discussing publishing possibilities.

So, no Two Rows Wampum tonight, again.  Instead I would like to show you some pictures I have been working on in the Workshop. Some of these have been on the blog before and some have not.  I would love to know what you think.

5-28-13 Cool Colors

“Which is more musical: a truck passing by a factory or a truck passing by a music school?”

John Cage

As I said the other day, I have been buried in the computer over the last few days. I am trying to pull together my “best” river images. I am splitting them into two groups, the cool colors and the hot colors. I have been showing them to a select group of colleagues.  I wanted to share with you three of the “cool” ones that have been consensus picks. I would love to hear your opinions.
