15-03-21 Seven Pictures -Fourteen Poems

I spent all day working in Lightroom on the pictures I shot yesterday in celebration of Spring.

In the process I “found” fourteen  2-line poems. I “created” them by taking the playlist of the 14 songs I had on auto repeat and for the first group of seven, taking the first line of each song in order played and then, for the second group, taking the first line of song 1, the second of song 2, the third of song 3 etc…

Scarily some of them are actually not just nonsensical.

So, to accompany your journey through my photographic day yesterday, here we go.

From my apartment

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping/Baby we’ve been together for a long, long time

I had me a boy, turned him into a man/You get a shiver in the dark

George Washington Bridge

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping/You get home from work and then we just turn out the lights

Oh, then I let him go./A band is blowing Dixie double four time

Do you remember I searched you out/Will you dance, Charlie boy, will you dance?

We’ve been doin’ this longer than you’ve been alive/They call me the breeze

I stood still is what I did/Will you dance, Charlie boy, will you dance?

Bottles of whisky and bottles of beer/Ain’t no change in me

MOMA

Outside another yellow moon/Hey babe, what’s in your eyes?

I hear Mariachi static on my radio/got no time for the corner boys, down in the street makin’ all that noise,

It was a teenage wedding/Oh what an ordinary day

15-02-09 Scale Part 3 – Weekly Photo Challenge (Body Response Division)

“These days we all play cool, calm and collected
Why, our lips could turn blue just shooting the breeze”

John Hiatt

I was walking north by the river today, after a Lightroom tutoring session, thinking about scale which is the weekly photo challenge word of the week. It was a really cold walk. About 27 degrees with a 20 mph wind seeming to come straight downriver from the north.

I realized that here was a perfect example of scale in a oblique way. Our response to temperature is based on the scale we are used to. I thought it was frigid. When I lived in Boston I would have said it was pretty cold but when I lived in St. Paul I would have thought it was a pretty nice winter day.

When I lived in LA I would have thought it was the apocalypse.

A shot upriver towards the George Washington Bridge.

15-01-30 Weekly Photo Challenge – Depth

“Never try to walk across a river just because it has an average depth of four feet.”

10-30-14 What’s Your Favorite…

The other day, someone asked me the question: “Of all your photographs, which is your favorite one of the Hudson?” I explained to them that I had no idea. I used to believe that I could tell you my top 20 but I don’t even believe that anymore. We had a long and fun discussion around the topic.

Is it the image that has sold the best? Well money is a good thing but that is actually the image that other people seem to like the best, of the images that I have released back into the wild. Is it the image with the most personal resonance? Well, yes, but that changes daily or weekly. Is it the most technically successful? No, this I am sure of. Is it flawed but emotive? Maybe. Does it conjure up memories and ideas? Well, yes but more than several fit that description.

In other words, I have no clue. I worry that I am supposed to know this if I expect to be taken seriously but then I say, the hell with that and put my head back on straight.

Recently this image has moved into the front of my mind. I went away from it for a long time but due to a project I am finalizing I have been drawn back to it.

9-16-14 Play It Again, Sam

When the winter rains
come pourin’ down
On that new home of mine,
Will you think of me
and wonder if I’m fine?
Will your restless heart
come back to mine
On a journey thru the past.
Will I still be in your eyes
and on your mind?

Neil Young

One of my favorite views of The George Washington Bridge is from the north. I love this view from The Heather Garden of The Cloisters. I took this image on 9/16/11.
