15-09-04 Weekly Photo Challenge – Connected

Challenge = Connected

2 of the people in this picture have known each other since 1997. Those two have known the other 3 since 2000.

We had a going away party for Caroline and Ben who are off to their first year in college (Wesleyan University and University of Michigan Honors program). Abigail and Eva are starting their sophomore years (Smith and Wesleyan). Noah is a sophomore at Bronx Science. Their friend Edy (SUNY Purchase Honors Program) could not make it since she had just returned to school for her sophomore year – but trust me she was there.

15-04-24 Weekly Photo Challenge – Motion

“I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.”

Isaac Newton

This week’s challenge is motion.

I went digging in the archives and came up with these two varieties of motion on the river.

12-28-14 The Spider And The Fly

“Will you walk into my parlor?” said the spider to the fly;
“‘Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you may spy.
The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to show when you are there.”
“Oh no, no,” said the little fly; “to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne’er come down again.”

8-22-14 AFrayedOrange (Weekly Photo Challenge And Travel Theme)

The photo challenge this week is Fray.  Ailsa’s travel theme is Orange. I looked all through the archives but to my surprise I do not have any pictures of carrot tops in a bar brawl.

Submitted for your approval.

1-17-14 Travel Theme: Silver

You got my heart, you got my soul
You got the silver, you got the gold
You got the diamonds from the mine
Well that’s all right, it’ll buy some time

Pat: “This is what I believe to be true. This is what I learned in the hospital. You have to do everything you can, you have to work your hardest, and if you do, if you stay positive, you have a shot at a silver lining.”

Several scenes later:

Tiffany: “What? You’re not gonna read that shit on my time. I can tell you all about the “Lord of the Flies.” It’s a bunch of boys on an island and they have a conch — they have a shell — and whoever has the conch has the power and they can talk. And if you don’t have the conch, then you don’t have the power. And then there’s a little chubby boy, and they call him Piggy and they’re really mean, and then there’s a murder. I mean, humanity is just nasty and there’s no silver lining.”

 Silver Linings Playbook

Ailsa is looking for a silver lining this week. I immediately thought of this statue that appeared in Union Square in February 2012.

11-8-13 Travel Theme: Connections

Everything is going in the wrong direction.
The doctor wants to give me more injections.
Giving me shots for a thousand rare infections
And I don’t know if he’ll let me go

Connection, I just can’t make no connection.
But all I want to do is to get back to you.

Alisa has brought us a new theme this week.  Connections. It is an idea that certainly applies to the blogosphere. What is Ailsa’s Weekly Travel Theme but an attempt at connection? What is blogging (usually) except an attempt at connection? I should just post a picture of me, looking at my screen, reading Andra, Vlad and Johna, T B Markinson or Linda (to name the people behind the last four blogs I read). Andra and I have even met several times in RL and I really like the woman and her MTM so… connection!

However, I am supposed to be a photographer not a philosopher thus… I was in Manhasset, NY (Long Island) today. Sadly nothing exotic only car issues that I wanted the original dealer to handle. It was a six hour process which left me time to wander.

So, here is a picture taken today that represents connection to me.

Despite not being a philosopher I want to point out that frequently a thing can be described by showing its opposite. Here is a picture (again taken today) that shows what can happen when connection is lost.

Here we have a few others showing their view of connections.

8-2-13 Travel Theme: Wild

Ailsa’s Travel Theme this week is wild

My first serious girlfriend quoted these lyrics in the letter she wrote to say she was breaking up with me. I was not appreciative.

I am in the market for a new camera. I have rented a Nikon D800 for the weekend to see if it fits the bill. I was walking the river and took this shot. It struck me as a good answer for Ailsa’s theme.

7-13-13 Weekly Photo Challenge: Golden Hour (Twenty Feet From Stardom Edition)

This weeks photo challenge is The Golden Hour. “In photography, the “golden hour” is the first and last hour of sunlight of the day.”

We went to see Twenty Feet from Stardom this evening. If it is playing in your town, do yourself a favor and go see it. It is an absolutely incredibly documentary on female backup singers. Think Lou Reed Walk on the Wild Side . Think Gimme Shelter. The music is spectacular, the stories are riveting. It is more than worth your time.

Twenty Feet from Stardom ended around 8pm and we walked out into the golden hour. Now, I am one of those odd ducks who doesn’t bring his camera kit to the movies so all I had was the phone but I think it represents.

3-24-13 (Really 3-23-13) {Travel Theme: Time #2} [Weekly Photo Challenge: Future Tense]

Okay…if at first, second, third, fourth, you don’t succeed – in the words of Samuel Beckett “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again, Fail again”

Actually this attempted post is filling both themes don’t you think?  It is taking a massive amount of time and here I am in yesterday’s future still trying .

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by
My riches can’t buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch
As tears go by
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doin’ things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
As tears go by

I took these shots at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Wellfleet MA in 2009. It is located on the corner of Rt 6 and Cahoon Hallow Road just across from PJ’s Family Restaurant, should you ever be in the area.
Hey, this (or some variant) is where we all end up the future. We all run out of time.
I know that many of the folks I pinged back from  Ailsa’s (Check out other views here) Travel Theme received the pings as did many from the Weekly Photo Challenge: Future Tense…but I am pinging again so you can see them!

4-11-12 March Into April

When I, a thoughtful and unblessed Presbyterian, examine the Koran, I know that beyond any question every Mohammedan is insane; not in all things, but in religious matters. When a thoughtful and unblessed Mohammedan examines the Westminster Catechism, he knows that beyond any question I am spiritually insane. I cannot prove to him that he is insane, because you never can prove anything to a lunatic–for that is a part of his insanity and the evidence of it. He cannot prove to me that I am insane, for my mind has the same defect that afflicts his. All Democrats are insane, but not one of them knows it; none but the Republicans and Mugwumps know it. All the Republicans are insane, but only the Democrats and Mugwumps can perceive it. The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane. – Mark Twain

OWS - People's Library-Union Square

It does seem only fair that since we had April in March we are now having March in April…don’t you think?  My only hope is that we don’t have February in May.

Raise your glass to the hard working people
Lets drink to the uncounted heads
Lets think of the wavering millions
Who need leaders but get gamblers instead
