4-22-14 Earth Day

It is earth day today. It seems to me that it has become very commercial and has lost its original impetus. I may just be cranky due to lack of sleep so don’t quote me.

On Sunday when I was down at South Ferry and Battery Park, the fishermen were out in force.

3-30-14 Travel Theme:Statues

We have a somewhat famous statue here in NYC…I refer to her as the first lighthouse of the Hudson River. (Ailsa grabbed one view of her for her blog but I thought I would take a different look.)…DSC_0083

The lady is hardly the only statue here in new York. One of my favorites stands in Kimlau Square in Chinatown: the statue of Lin Zexu.

Here are some other statues:

2-10-14 Intimidating

“There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.”

Jane Austen

“It sends out a very clear message: “Mess with us and we’ll do something worse than kill you. We’ll kill your children.”

Suzanne Collins

“If you want to control someone, all you have to do is to make them feel afraid.”

Paul Coelho

The assignment for Amy Arbus’ class this week is to make three portraits of someone intimidating. It can be the same person 3 times in different positions or three different people.  They must be moving (although note that the class is called the Fleeting Moment so they can be small “micro-movements”.) This is probably going to turn out to be the most difficult assignment for me It is not that I do not find some people intimidating, it is just that those people who can intimidate me tend to be the people who REALLY do not want their picture taken. If it was a month between classes I could find someone and, at least, neutralize some of the hostility but in a week: Not so much. Now, we can find people who intimidate others which is what I have ended up doing. I am not sure that has the same gut level effect on the photographs.

This is what I have been able to come up with so far. Hey I still have 22 hours until class!

5-12-12 A Tourist In New York

As mentioned yesterday, my parents are visiting for Mother’s Day weekend and so I took them for a tourist day today. We hit the High Line and took a 75 minute boat ride down the Hudson to the Statue and back.  Things I only seem to do when I have out-of-town guests.

I took a lot of great shots (I think) especially faces on the boat tour but I am only putting up two today, one from each adventure.

It’s all happening at the zoo
