“The soft rush of taxis by him, and laughter, laughters hoarse as a crow’s, incessant and loud, with the rumble of the subways underneath – and over all, the revolutions of light, the growings and recedings of light – light dividing like pearls – forming and reforming in glittering bars and circles and monstrous grotesque figures cut amazingly on the sky.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald

10-14-14 Weekly Photo Challenge: Dreamy – ICP Borough Walk Edition

Friday night the title of the ICP Borough Walk, led by Angel Franco, was Manhattan Under The Stars. Sadly there were not many stars but midtown, especially Times Square, was jumping. One way or another, no matter the year, there is always something dreamy (or dream-like) going on in Times Square and the surrounding area.

Take a little stroll with me?

10-13-14 Every Picture Tells A Story? (Potentially NSFW)

That is what they say. Sometimes though you need a sequence of pictures to tell the whole story.

There are 8 million tourists in the Naked City. On Friday night’s ICP Borough Walk I found the story of two of them:

7-11-14 David H Wells – Photographer

I just finished up a week as a TA for a course taught by David H Wells at ICP called “The Photographic Tools For Travel Photography”. He is a great teacher and photographer with an insane amount of publications, awards, grants etc. over his career. Click on his name above to get a small taste.

The class was both a lecture and practice class. We went out every day to shoot and then critiqued the work the next morning. Here are a few of my shots that made the grade…although we all agreed I was veering dangerously close to street photography and probably crossed the line in several cases…

11-13-13 Boro Walk -2013-It’s A Wrap

All Borough walks are concluded for 2013. I thought I would throw together a gallery of the 10 walks. One shot of the photographer and one shot that represented something about the Borough or walk – to me.

These surely do not qualify as pictures for an exhibit. These are tokens as much for my memories as for any other reason. The only borough not represented is Staten Island…but hey, they are used to being an afterthought! So, as always, click on any picture in the gallery to jump to full size.

7-11-13 Signs Of A New York Summer

What! Summer again?

Yup.It is summer here in New York City and for some reason I feel compelled to write about it. I decided to walk uptown from an appointment this afternoon and soon found myself nearing Times Square,  (Reverb) The Crossroooooads Of the Wooorrrld!!!!!

Now I saw a lot of summer today. I choose to share two long-established New York traditions and two new ones (at least to me). Everything I saw today you can see in other seasons in NYC but somehow they just feel right when it is summer and you see them all the same day.

The first thing I came to is an “old” reliable: The Mitzvah Tank

Boro Walk I believe that I have seen the Mitzvah Tank in all seasons but I know I see it more frequently in Midtown Manhattan in summer.

As I mentioned in a previous post, as is true in many parts of the country, Times Square is now flooded with “characters” to an extent that would make Disney blush.  However we have updated some of them. I do not remember Robin looking like this.

Boro Walk

Batman is just out of frame but he had a backpack which totally blew the illusion.

Next we came to a real “Old Faithful”

Boro Walk

I truly have no idea how long the “Naked Cowboy:” has been around. It seems as if always is the answer.

But…lo and behold, two blocks uptown, near the north end of Times Square, his latest imitators…

Boro Walk

I  was pleased to see that, cute as these young women may be, the original was grabbing much more attention and camera time.

I am letting Jonathan Richman sing us out today.

5-22-13 To See What There Is To See

“The first question I ask myself when something doesn’t seem to be beautiful is why do I think it’s not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason.”

John Cage

Following up on my attempting to not just look but to see, I walked in some familiar places in town yesterday. (Today I walked the stretch of the Hudson I have been on more than any other, details tomorrow.) This is what I found.

3-7-13 Travel Theme: Roads Phoneography Edition #No #Snowpocalypse

I really was expecting to have a non phone picture today but time ran away from me and then I realized two birds – one stone!  I thought I would do a second submission for Ailsa’s Road theme and continue with WP phoneopgraphy thing at the same time.

I was walking through Times Square in the rain (although it is snowing 3+ miles uptown here in Morningside Heights) and said Road?
